First Game!

Mitchell and Matthew had their first game today and it was a lot of fun to watch. Mitchell had quite the crowd at the game cheering him on. Mommy, Laura, Gramps, Memama, Uncle Jason, Aunt Emma, Aunt Shirley, Anne, and family friends Kirk & Rebecca. The only people missing were Nana & Papa who were in OK helping out Aunt Bekah & Uncle Riley with new baby Ella. I guess we can forgive them for missing it. ;)

Matthew is extremely patient with the kiddos which is a great attribute to have as coach of 4-year-olds. We're also pretty sure that Mitchell is the most unfocused of the 6 kids on the team. He did a lot of transforming on the field and a few Lego people dance moves. He wasn't alone in the dancing category though which prompted Memama to say that if we had a stereo with us the kids would've danced instead of play soccer.

The final score was a 4-4 tie, but the first goal scored was the other team scoring in their own goal and it was a complete accident. Mitchell's team is in blue.

Mitchell saw this picture and asked, "Is that me? I need to run!" He did some good running, but the kid with the ball in this pic is G and he's the best player we've got.See?! He did run. The first picture is the little breakaway he had when I was changing lenses of course! No goal was scored, but who really cares?! I think he's getting the hang of it. He loves playing with his new friends.
Getting ready to kick-off the first game! Mitchell is there standing with his hand in his mouth probably wondering when it's going to start. See how patiently Matthew is trying to answer G's question? At this level Matthew is on the field with the team telling them what to do. Many times he'd just pick up whichever kid he needed and plopped them down where he needed them. At the end of each game the parents form a tunnel where the kids run through and get high fives from everyone. Kind of neat and kind of cheesy. Sorry. I'll participate from now on, but I did want to get a picture for the scrapbook.

Some of the cuter and funnier moments of the day:
  • One child from the other team was so excited that his sister was watching him after her game finished that during every break in the action he would run off the field and hug her.
  • Another kid on the other team started crying after G scored a goal. His Dad yelled after him "It's okay! That's going to happen sometimes!" Didn't seem to make the kid feel any better though.
  • At one point, Kirk (a family friend watching the game with us) yelled out "Mitchell! Focus buddy! FOCUS!"
  • Numerous times the ball went way out of bounds only to have the kids follow it in a huddle not paying any attention that they were out.
  • The other team so close to the goal and all the parents yelling "Kick it in! Kick it In!" only to have the ball seem to stay still while six pairs of legs kicked wildly at it. The ball ended up never going in.
